The Mayans and Aztecs made exceptional use of obsidian in their societies, using it for weaponry, jewelry, and protective talismans.
Many Native Americans used obsidian for spearheads and arrowheads.
Geology
Obsidian is a type of igneous rock covered with volcanic glass. Rainbow Obsidian forms when black obsidian is exposed strong lighting for a period of time after being uncovered or polished. This stone comes from Mexico.
