What do we mean when we call ourselves Spiritual?

Practitioners of disciplines like yoga, meditation, Tai chi, Qi-Gong, to name a few, as well as practitioners or professionals in the area of energy work (Reiki, Reflexology, Craneo-Sacral, etc.) consider themselves spiritual. Yet this doesn’t tell us what it means to be spiritual.

There are a lot of misconceptions about what it means to be spiritual.

Some people use the term spiritual, to distinguish themselves from followers of main stream religions. Still, this doesn’t tell us what it means to be spiritual.

Many of the major religions and philosophies ask us to put more emphasis on spiritual matters rather than the physical plane. They tell us that it’s ok to go through sorrow, pain and suffering at the physical level because at the end we will be rewarded in heaven.

Some of the professionals in the area of Alternative Medicine and Lightworkers advise us to “raise our vibrational levels” by putting emphasis on our spiritual practices by distancing ourselves from the “illusion” of the physical reality.

This notion of dividing our focus, dividing ourselves into separate spiritual and physical aspects fails because we are integral beings. The physical body is not bad and the spirit is not the only good. Our physical manifestation and our spiritual essence are interconnected and interdependent. A healthy and harmonious body is the perfect vessel for the Spirit.

Being spiritual is not just believing in a higher being or higher consciousness. Being spiritual is not living a life of isolation, living on a mountain or in a cave away from the toxic environment of today’s society.

Being spiritual is living in everyday society and contributing to the betterment of those living in such a society. We contribute by setting an example with our daily lives, by teaching, by creating positive, dynamic and active change.

Being spiritual is understanding that everything in life is interconnected and by living a life that contributes we purify and strengthen that connection.

The key to a spiritual life is not getting away from the realities of the physical world, on the contrary the key to a spiritual life is to live fully conscious of the physical, individual impact we have on the whole. The key is to live our lives in harmony with our surroundings and with ourselves. The key is to see the sacredness of life in every aspect of creation. It’s to see sacredness in every human, in every animal, in every plant and every rock.

Being spiritual is finding the sacredness of our hearts.
