Prehnite Crystals

History and Folklore

This mineral was first discovered in 1788 withing the Karoo dolerites of South Africa, a unique and valuable geological feature that has produced vast amounts of fossils dating back to the carboniferous period,  roughly 320 million years ago.

The minerals name was derived from Hendrik Von Prehn, a Dutch military commander whose forces controlled what was then a Dutch settlement

Some believe that prehnite’s strengths can be enhanced when put in a grid with other green stones, such as Peridot and Green Calcite.

Geology

Prehnite is a combination of calcium and aluminum inosilicate mineral. It often forms in small globular clusters or shapes resembling stalactites. Prehnite is often found in deposits alongside zeolites like apophyllite and stilbite but it is not a zeolite itself. it is frequently found and sold containing large amounts of Epidote Inclusions or as specimens containing both prehnite and epidote crystals on the same matrix. Typically this mineral has a green or yellow-green in color but it has been found as colorless white, blue, and even pink. Prehnite can be found worldwide, but is commonly sourced from Brazil and South Africa where an extremely rare orange variety was discovered in 2000.

Health Folklore

Prehnite has been said to aid the functions of the kidneys, bladder, thymus, shoulders, chest, lungs, and connective tissue. It is particularly useful for children, helping clear illnesses quickly and overcome trauma.
