Used as a gemstone for over 5,000 years. Most ancient Egyptian burials have contained jewelry crafted of this stone and it was also prevalent in ancient Rome. 

Early civilizations used this stone as a token of friendship, with people exchanging it when they wished to stay connected.

In India, bullets were made with garnet because they were believed to have greater power.

Garnet Geology

Garnet is actually a group of Silicate Minerals rather than a single stone with the bright red variation most often thought of as traditional Garnet. As a group, it shows a wide range of colors with each usually going by a different name and red being most abundant. Most garnets are quite opaque with many inclusions but they range in clarity greatly and gem quality specimens can be highly clear. Madagascar, India, and Tanzania are the largest sources of garnet today but deposits have been found within metamorphic rock globally.
