Historical Folklore
The word “cinnabar” is derived from the Persian term for “dragon blood”.
Cinnabar was used heavily in ancient Rome the near east and the new world as a rouge-like red pigment for art and cosmetics. It was known by ancients to have toxic effects from over exposure and is no longer used as a pigment. Pure Cinnabar contains small amounts of Mercury that are released when the stone is crushed or ground up.

Geology
Cinnabarite a is typically found as a mixture of a mineral matrix, commonly Quartz, Calcite, dolomite or barite, with pure Cinnabar being deposited on that matrix. Cinnabar bright red or pink sulfide crystal formally named mercury sulfide. Cinnabar is the most common source of mercury being found globally and has been mined for much of human history to be used as either a pigment or to crushed and heated to extract pure mercury.
