Bahia Amethyst is a unique Amethyst formation that gets its name from the locale in which it was found. This Extra Large Bahia Amethyst Point is an extraordinary specimen that reaches 14″ in length at nearly 8Lbs and shows the defining multi-point formations with moderate clarity. This variety of Amethyst gains these qualities through the process of crystal formation being stopped and initiated again over a period of time This growth habit has led to its metaphysical association that combines the properties of amethyst with Elestial Quartz.

Historical Folklore

Crushed amethyst was used by the Ancient Greeks and Romans as a way to ward off intoxication. One story is told that partly this was due to the fact that the Romans sometimes put a piece of this stone in their wine. Then the wine could be watered down and still retain its purple color from the crushed stones within. That meant less alcohol, and thus, less intoxication. Both the Greeks and Romans made drinking cups of amethyst and wore talismans made of this stone to prevent intoxication.

There is a Greek legend of how amethyst got its purple color. Once Dionysus was so annoyed by Artemis that he set his sacred tigers upon a maiden attending her shrine. To preserve the maiden, whose name was Amethyst, Artemis petrified her in sparkling quartz. Lamenting this virgin’s demise, Dionysus poured the contents of his cup over the statue, which immediately became infused with the purple of the grape.

This Amethyst Point can be gently washed with soap and water if necessary.

The vibrant purple color of Amethyst is sensitive to the sun, if left in sunlight for very long periods of time the color will gradually lighten.
