The Sri Yantra graphs the harmonizing of all energy that eventually occurs throughout creation. Sri Yantra means “the most honored yantra.” It is thousands of years old, and is prominent in Far Eastern art, both Hindu and Buddhist. It is a popular image among Western yoga practitioners.
A “yantra” graphs energy as it moves through its own field, or merkaba. Yantras are often incorporated into mandalas. “Mandala” means circle, in Sanskrit. So when a yantra is created into a schematic of the universe, it is also a mandala. The Sri Yantra, as shown here, is both a yantra and a mandala.
The Sri Yantra is so highly revered because it accurately depicts the process by which, when spirit emerges from source (the central point) and descends into matter (three downward facing triangles – symbolic of matter or the feminine creation), eventually it self-corrects and sends up an ascending triangle (a symbol for spirit, or the masculine aspect of the universe). While initially these triangles are not equilateral, and hence move back and forth between the two energies, they finally each become equilateral and order is restored in the universe.
Creation Mandala
This final equilateral triangle overlap is also known in the Far East as the Creation Yantra and, in the west, as the Star of David or star tetrahedron. Our human energy field is a star tetrahedron in action, and when we are in balance, the two sides are both spinning well, as shown here, and we are content.

I have frequently seen this geometric turned upside down, which is incorrect – when done this way it depicts three ascending triangles as the start of matter. The classic formation is the downward turned one that we use in our products.
I have personally worked with the Sri Yantra Mandala for many years. I have found it very soothing to keep it energetically present. It helps me to have detachment from whatever unbalanced situation I might temporarily find myself. Eventually, through my own efforts, those of others and those of the universe, the situation will self-correct (“with a little help from my friends”).
When you are undertaking a new project, or are trying to figure out why the energy of a project is not working well, the Sri Yantra is your greatest friend! It helps you to stay focused, in balance, and to avoid the pitfalls of any project.

Hi Atala, thank you so much for writing up on Sri Yantra. Its pretty difficult to actually find infomation on this sacred geometry. Just a quick question, is it necessary to activate a Sri Yantra pendant? I have gotten one to bless me with a smooth sailing life. Any idea on this? Different websites says different thing. Another article mentioned something holding in and praying to it. Do you have any experience in it?

Like anything in the energy realm – the objects work because of their inherent content and form. HOWEVER they can be in a dormant state if no one pays attention to them. If you choose to consciously work with that particular energy, by focusing on it/entering into its world, then the power of the form increases. Eventually, after working with the form for a considerable time, you can absorb the energy of the form into your own existence and then you don’t need to focus on the form anymore because you have absorbed its energy into yourself. You are not “praying to it” like it is superior to you – you are identifying with its energy to acquire those universal qualities for yourself.

Hi Dawn, whether you hang it on your wall or wear it is entirely up to you. Many people use a Sri Yantra as a focus point for meditation so they prefer to keep it in their home, others like to be reminded of the energy they’re receiving so they wear it as a necklace or other jewelry. I was just gifted a necklace with the Sri yantra upside down, does that mean it won’t work?
What do you mean by upside down? The correct path for the Sri Yantra is three descending triangles and then an upward triangle occurs (e.g. descent of energy into matter until spirit steps forward to correct the balance). IF you mean the Sri Yantra was placed with the three triangles going up instead of down…well, that is just ignorance on the part of the craftsperson. It will not be as effective as the correct alignment, but it will still help you align energy, just not as strongly or effectively.
You could also look at it as a geometric construction in which a seeker is “spacing out” and heading up into spirit before universal energy, which always seeks balance, steps forward and initiates a downward triangle. ~ Atala

I just bought a sri yantra sacred geometry necklace but I notice it doesnt have the outter square with 4 doors opened. It’s been bothering me k I knowing it isn’t complete. Is there a reason for no outter square, does it matter?
Hello Angel. When you are dealing with the Sri Yantra form detailed in a very small space, it doesn’t matter unless it matters to you. In terms of its use as a shorthand form for controlling energy – it is stronger and less diffused if the full geometric is there. In actuality, the graph itself is the yantra. The circle, square and door build out is essential if you are going to seriously work with it. In the case of jewelry, the form of the pendant can serve as the container.
I am so confused as to how it could be upside down…it looks like it is exactly the same no matter which way you have it held up, I am hurting my eyes staring at it and must be missing something, please help!!!
Hi Marinés! It can be difficult to see, but a correctly placed Sri Yantra has five downward-pointing triangles and four upward-pointing triangles.
